What is SEO and why do I need it?

Tag: SEOadmin @ 1:25 pm

Well seeing as Ive not made any posts to this blog since installing word press, I thought I would start with a little post on SEO and what it entails incase you were wondering.

I do have many people ask me, “What is SEO?” and “Do it need it?”.

Well the answer to the second question is a resounding yes. In my mind anyway and maybe in yours after reading this post.

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is the art/skill/practice of optimising/modifying a web sites html and other code to facility the “crawling” of the site by the top search engines such as google and yahoo. Emphasis is placed on certain aspsects of the code such as, title tags, meta data, the pages copy, alt tags, link anchor text, folder names, paths, link titles and other elements. These are commonly known as “on page” optimisation and is very important.

Another method of search engine optimistion is that of “off page” optimisation and normally involves building good quality relevant inbound links from external sites to your site. The best places to get a link from should be pages that have similar and relevant content to your site, have a good Google Page Rank(although not vital) and use good anchor text.

One thing I notice all the time with owners of web sites who want to rank well on google(normally number1) is that they are in a mad rush to get there. Unfortunately this isnt possible. If you want to be no1 on google fast for your keyword use CPC google adsense and pay a few pounds a click for the pleasure. This soon ads up. Some businesses are ok with this and feel that if they have a good conversion ratio then this money is just an expense that is far outweighed by the revenues they will make from selling their products or services. Most of us though want good FREE natural ranking.

Well my answer to that is “Nothing is free”. SEO takes time and money and unless you are going to do it yourself you better be willing to pay someone else to do it for you. SEO takes time and is often tideous and boring but can be exciting, especially when seeing your sites jump up the SERPs pages to a good postion.

So remember SEO takes time.

Another question you hear all the time is ”How does it work?”. “How does google rank my site?”.

Google ”crawls” your site periodically, the more links you have from external sites the more often you will be crawled. When you are crawled the search engine will only take chunks of your site, it will not take all of it. Once it has certain page content it will then store this in a database somewhere ready to compare this data with users search queries on their web sites.

So we now know “how” you are crawled but we dont know what determines your rankings. The following are probably the most important:

Quality inbound links from relevant sites

Page titles

Page copy(content/text)

Anchor text from external links

Domain Age

Google page rank

All of these are important, but just how much weight they carry with the google algorithym is not known exactly. One thing is for sure, they are all very important elements of seo.
